Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo was born on April 5, 1947 to former president Diosdado Macapagal and Dr. Evangelina Macaraeg. Arroyo was married to lawyer Jose Miguel Arroyo with three children: Juan Miguel, Evangelina Lourdes and Diosdado Ignacio.
She entered government service in 1987 as assistant secretary of Department of Trade and Industry ( DTI ) in Cory Aquino's administration. After two years, she was promoted to undersecretary of DTI. She first try politics in 1992 where she ran and won for a seat in senate, and was re-elected in 1995. In 1998 presidential election, Gloria Arroyo was elected as vice president of the Philippines. She was also appointed by then President Joseph Estrada as Secretary of Social Welfare and Development. Arroyo resigned her post from the cabinet in October 2000 amidst the scandals that led to the ouster of President Estrada.
Gloria Macapagal Arroyo sworn in as President of the Republic of the Philippines on January 20, 2001 and served the remaining years of Presidents Estrada's term. In 2004 election, Gloria Arroyo was elected for a six year term as President of the Republic of the Philippines.
