June 12, 2011 marks the 113th anniversary of the proclamation of Philippine Indepence. It was held in 1898 at the balcony of Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo in Kawit, Cavite where the Philippine National Anthem first played and the Philippine flag was formally unflured.
The flag was conceptualized by President Emilio Aguinaldo during his exile in Hongkong in 1897. The first flag was sewed by Marcela Agoncillo with the help of her daughter Lorenza Agoncillo and Delfina Natividad, niece of Jose Rizal.
The flag was first raised in Alapan, Imus, Cavite on May 28, 1898. The flag has blue color on top as a symbol of state of peace and the red at the bottom, and reversed in times of war. It has white triangle at the side with star in each corner representing the three main islands, Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao. It has a sun in the center of the triangle with eight rays symbolizing the eight provinces that declared in a state of war almost from the star of the revolution. This provinces are Manila, Cavite, Bulacan, Pampanga, Nueva Ecija, Tarlac, Laguna and Batangas.
